Recriminations follow as Paul bitterly denounces her for having had an abortion six months earlier without his knowledge or consent as her birthday celebration turns a shambles. One final, brief reunion is attempted but the couple comes to terms with the failure of their once romantic notions.

Interesting earlier version

I was assigned a very powerful scene from this play in an acting class and wanted to read the entire play. My scene partner got the current Samuel French edition, but I saw on Amazon that there had been a hardcover book club edition and thought I'd order that.
Remember the old Fireside Theater Book Club? They brought out exclusive hardcover editions of new plays and were a favorite of actors. They changed their name to Stage and Screen to try to broaden their audience, but in these days of mass-market booksellers that wasn't enough, and they folded in 2003. They tried to bring out editions of new plays around the time they opened on Broadway so they'd be current, and this necessitated making a deal to publish the play well before it had gone through the rehearsal process, in which plays are frequently altered and adjusted. With most plays that doesn't make much of a difference, if any, but with an occasional play it means the book club edition is very different from the final published play.
The copyright on the hardcover edition is 1979, while the copyright on the currently in-print edition says "1979, 1980." The dialog is substantially different. The final play is tighter and better, but if you're interested in this play or this playwright you might be interested in reading both. It's a powerful play. Kevin Kline starred in the original Broadway production. I hope I can do justice to Chinese horse scene.

Compelling and Powerful

Really interesting characters; the dialogue is well written and natural, and very heartfelt. The characters in it are extremely complex and great sources of monologues and acting class scene work. There is a wonderful plot twist near the end of the play that tore my heart out. Would recommend!
