From Publishers Weekly
Hurwitz's L.A. thriller has noir pulp chutzpah in spades, even if it does start out with a bang and end up shooting blanks. When Andrew Drew Danner, a crime novelist, is tried for the murder of his ex-fiancée, Genevieve Bertrand, beside whose body he was found holding a bloody knife, he pleads not guilty. He has no memory of how he got to the crime scene because of a breakdown caused by a recently removed brain tumor. Once he's found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity, Danner sets out to find the real killer—or discover some very nasty things about himself. Someone's also trying to frame him for a second murder that appears to be similar to that of Bertrand. Luckily, Danner gets help from old friend Chic, an ex-professional baseball player, and Lloyd Wagoner, a troubled police criminalist. A tense, page-turning first act leads to disappointing explanations involving the police and a misinterpreted phone message. Still, the fast pace and ingenious setup provide considerable tension. Hurwitz (Last Shot) may not have written a California classic, but it's a worthy effort.

From Booklist
Successful crime-novelist Drew Danner has gained true tabloid fame--as the murderer of his ex-fiance. Found by the police in the midst of a brain-tumor-induced grand mal seizure, with her blood covering his hands and his fingerprints on the murder weapon, Danner seems to be the only person in L.A. who isn't sure he is a killer. Emergency surgery after his arrest removes the tumor, and a temporary insanity defense frees him, but his comfortable life is shattered. He can't live without knowing if he killed a woman he once loved. His only choice is to become a character in a story he hasn't written. Danner's anguish is compellingly described, and the plot has more twists and turns than Mulholland Drive. At least half a dozen characters are vividly drawn, and nearly all are like Danner--struggling to recover from some tragic and life-altering event. Hurwitz's insights about L.A. life sound knowing and are often ruefully funny, e.g., "L.A., where a porn star runs for governor and an action figure wins." Review
Hurwitz's carefully interwoven plot lines and taut writingas well as his pulsing descriptions of Los Angelesmake for a deeply satisfying read, and the ending, revealed with masterful simplicity, shows the complex desires that make each of us capable of murder. A performance worthy of applause.

With The Crime Writer, Gregg Hurwitz has taken a quantum leap forward in the realm of American suspense literature. A thrilling, mind-bending journey, it is also deeply human and beautifully written. Youll turn the final page with profound regret.

"The Crime Writer" is the must read crime novel of the year. Brilliantly rendered with a hip intelligence and fierce originality, this book is a stunner.Gregg Hurwitz may well have created a brand-name franchiseand deservedly so.

Itd be so simple to say that "THE CRIME WRITER" toys and pokes and jabs with the genre. And of course it does. But by merging author and hero, Hurwitz sharpens a brand-new edge in his voice. An elegant, engaging, and wonderfully human book.

Another excellent book by Hurwitz
By Astrida M.
To me, all of Gregg Hurwitz' books are excellent! With that being said, this book was no exception. It was a little bit different than his other books because it moved a little slower than the others but then again the main character was recovering from brain surgery and had the heartache of losing his fiancee. This felt very true to life and I felt a part of the investigation. Also, I had read all of the other Hurwitz books before I read this one. I am all caught up now. I love this author and cannot wait for the highly anticipated Orphan X.

I really enjoyed this book
By Marnie
I loved this book. The book is written based on the perspective of the writer of crime novels and it is interesting that his quest to find the killer is based on that perspective. It is a refreshing viewpoint that I have not seen in any other novel. I'm glad I didn't give up on Hurwitz after reading The Troubleshooter because I did not like that book and the graphic violence. In this book Hurwitz's descriptions are really wonderful so you can really see in your mind what he is describing.
His description those who flock to Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune and often fail is superb. Just a small example from the text of the book: "L.A. is the edge of the American dream, the farthest your hopes can carry you before you topple into the Pacific, Icarus without water wings. And yet still they come. They come out and crowd the cliff edges, penguins above dangerous waters. L.A. will devour them. It will crush them into inconsequentiality, grind them into a paste and smear them through the city's forgotten alleys." That certainly is illustrative of so many who never found that dream. In contrast, he wrote also wrote some beautiful, sensitive descriptions, particularly of Caroline.
I also was completely shocked and surprised byt who the "bad guy" was! I wish the book was a little longer. I would have enjoyed more of his wonderful writing.

Thoroughly enjoyed.

Having started reading all of the Hurwitz books, (finished all of the Kindle Time Rackley books, waiting for the last one to come back to Kindle), I enjoy the pacing and the plot twists that Hurwitz brings to his stories. I can fully recommend all of his books that I have read so far. I would advise not starting a new one if you have to get up in the morning.
